How to Select the Correct Size Skates

When trying to determine the correct size speedskating boots it is important to understand that a properly fitting pair of speed skating boots should not fit like your sneakers. They should be substantially snugger. A perfect fit is often described as vice like without causing pain. The tips of your toes should just barely brush against the front of the boots while standing up. If you are anticipating foot growth, it is acceptable to have 5-7mm of additional room in the front of the boot. We do not recommend much more space that this because it can result in a sloppy fit which can hinder the skaters performance due to imprecise edge control.

We recommend the following method for determining the length of your feet:

1. Place a piece of paper on the floor against a flat section of wall.
2. Stand on the paper one foot at a time (in bare feet) with your heel pressed firmly against the wall.
3. Have someone else make a mark at the longest part of the foot (usually the big toe or the second toe)
4. Follow the same process for the other foot.
5. Measure the length from the edge of the paper to the marks you have made and note which is the left and right measurement. It is best to make these measurements in millimeters.
6. It is normal for one foot to be slightly longer than the other (3-5mm).

Now that you have your feet length, refer to the manufacturers measurement charts below to locate the appropriate boot size.

When placing your order, please be sure to include your left and right foot measurements in the notes field of the order. If you have not included this information on the order it will delay shipment as we will need to call you to verify the foot measurements to ensure that you are getting the correct size.

We recommend that you skate without socks to improve the responsiveness of your skates. If you skate with socks, please let us know when you place your boot order so we can account for this in our size recommendation.

NOTE: If you have a foot length discrepancy larger than 6mm, it may be possible to request different sized boots for each foot to get a precise fit for both feet. The availability varies by manufacturer and may require additional time for order fulfillment.

NOTE: Each manufacturer's last (boot shape) is different, so the correct size may vary by up to two full boot sizes depending on the manufacturer. Do not attempt to order boots based solely on the US shoe size. You must always compare the recommended foot length in millimeters first.

NOTE: We find that the Viking size chart runs true to size. If your feet are 280mm, you are a size 42. One caveat - Viking's toe box is narrow, so be prepared for a tight fit in the toe box. This does stretch out over time. The toe box can also be mechanically stretched for increased comfort.
