2016 Short Track Speed Skating Desert Classic Recap

This past weekend saw some great racing at the 2016 Short Track Desert Classic, held at the Utah Olympic Oval. Over 70 speed skaters raced in the two-day event, representing the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. With World Cup Trials only two months away, Desert Classic was a chance for speed skaters to test out their racing skills, and US Speedskating had a strong showing, sweeping the Open A Finals for both Men and Women.

J.R. Celski, who was racing for the first time since January, won the Men’s Open A 1500m and 500m on Day 1, as well as the Men’s 1500m Superfinal on Day 2. He finished first overall, with a final score of 1756 points. Adam Callister won the 1000m on Day 2 and finished 2nd overall, collecting a score of 1620 points. Aaron Tran finished third with 1015 points.

For the ladies, Kimi Goetz won the Women’s 1500m on Day 1, and Kristin Santos won the 500m. On Day 2, Jessica Smith-Kooreman won the Women’s 1000m, and Kristin Santos won the Women’s 1500m Superfinal. Kristin Santos finished first overall with 1720 points, Kimi Goetz finished second with 1300 points, and April Shin finished third with 1216 points.

Speed skaters in the Open B Men, the Combined A and the Combined B Mixed Categories had a strong showing as well. Cooper McCleod, of Puget Sound Speed Skating Club, took first overall in Open B Men with 1800 points, while Dylan Woodbury, of Park City Speed Skating Club, took first in the Combined A Mixed Category with 1576 points. And Joon Lm took the Combined B Mixed Overall Title with 1556 points.
